Diversity in New York CityNew York was founded by the Dutch in 1624 and was originally named Fort Orange. The colony's area was later expanded by the purchasing of land from Algonquin Indians. This newly expanded iteration of Fort Orange was renamed as New Amsterdam. Finally, in 1664, the city was once again renamed New York when it was surrendered to the English.
From the beginning, New York was a seaport for merchants and immigrants to come by. This has helped it grow into the diverse city that it is today. Its inhabitants have the opportunity to learn the intricacies and customs of multiple cultures. "New York, Concrete jungle where dreams are made" - Beyoncé |
New York City compared to Connecticut StateCompared to New York City, Connecticut lacks racial diversity. Due to the large influx of white immigrants, it is clear that there would be a largely white population. However, the ratio disparity is unexpected considering they are both located along the east side of the U.S., a common port-of-entry for many immigrants.
An explanation for this would be that New York City is a seaport, providing much opportunity for workers. As a city that thrives with business, Connecticut contrasts greatly since it is a more isolated environment. In the past where land-prospecting was the main reason to explore and expand in America. Today, many immigrants see New York as the city that they can settle down in with financial stability and without any fear of racial or ideological suppression. Since its creation, New York City has built its reputation on diversity and capitalist competition which has resulted in it being an international hub for any race, culture, and religion. |
